IAVM member venues should never be reticent when it comes to sharing their increasing roles as safe shelters during natural disasters.

September, of course, marks the one-year anniversary of some of the greatest hurricane devastation ever seen as Harvey, Irma, Maria, and others churned their way onto land and wreaked destruction, death, and financial losses in the billions.

The September/October issue of Facility Manager magazine takes you to Puerto Rico, site of where Irma left a mark despite making a bullseye hit only to be followed up a couple of weeks later by the knockout punch of Maria.

The Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan, managed by AEG Facilities, and venue General Manager Jorge Perez and his outstanding team performed admirably during both events. We take you to the story of Perez, whose path to his eventual position was full of twisting turns. It would result that the right man was chosen for the job as evidenced by his passion for the community and the venue, which served as a command center for FEMA, the National Guard and others during the period before, during, and after the hurricanes.

We have some other features also certain to grab your attention, including a look at construction and the latest trends happening in that piece of business, along with what one particular venue is doing to accommodate those with “non-visible” challenges, and yet another feature looking at emergency response kits and how best to use them.

These are all in addition to the familiar sector columns where your peers write on the latest happenings within their venue types.

It is all coming your way in the September/October magazine. Enjoy the reading and take a bow. You deserve to.
